Fermentation

Most of us have heard this term…our first thought might be, “Oh yeah, beer and wine!”… Right? When it comes to fermented foods… we tend to put a wall up immediately. “Absolutely not, not for me. Period. The end. ” Sound familiar? Now add in the term "lacto" with a hyphen… then we lost you for sure.

Maybe you have heard the popular word in the media on the health topic: Probiotics. “Add them into your diet, take a supplement, they are really good for your gut health, etc.” Maybe this term is a little less frightening or intimidating. Still you may be wondering- What are they? What do they do? Why do we need to add them to our diet? How do I add them to my diet?

Fermentation is as old as life itself. These processes have been handed down and passed around, creating nutrient-dense foods and beloved dishes. The most familiar fermented foods are made using lacto-fermentation.

Lindsey Whiteaker of Harvest Roots Farm and Ferment of Mentone, Alabama will be joining Liz and Ashley to bring you a wealth of knowledge and wisdom on these very healing foods and ancient practices. Harvest Roots is the first fermentation company in Alabama. We are very fortunate to have them visit the Shoals.

A little introduction:
Beyond preservation advantages, lacto-fermentation increases (or preserves) the vitamin and enzyme levels, as well as digestibility, of the fermented food. Having the proper balance of gut bacteria and enough digestive enzymes helps you absorb more of the nutrients in the foods you eat (therefore, you won’t need as many supplements and vitamins) and you’ll be absorbing more of the live nutrients in your foods. Introduces beneficial bacteria into your digestive system and to help balance the bacteria in your digestive system.
Fermented foods are easy for a beginner to prepare, and it doesn’t take long to gain confidence to make basic yogurt, sauerkraut, and variety of vegetables, fruits and beverages- such as kombucha.

- 1 hour yoga class -- Beginner Level-all are welcome
- Complete fermentation demonstration (i.e sauerkraut, pickles, peppers)
- Recipe samples
- Farm Tour (optional)

Time: 1-4pm (yoga, workshop, farm tour)

    I have Fibromyalgia would like to attend fermented class but need to know if class is in air conditioning facilities I can’t take heat and any comfortable soft chairs can seat for long on hard chairs

    I plan on attending the workshop on fermentation on Saturday. I gave Liz a check last week. Just wanted to confirm
